Community Service Leader’s Message

Hello Jamul Chaparros!

Wow!  I can’t believe how fast May has flown by!  As you can see the newsletter is coming out later than usual, it’s almost June.  May thru early July are our busiest time in 4-H, especially for those of you who are active in the various county fairs.

I’d like to congratulate everyone who participated in the Eastern San Diego County Jr. Fair.  Regardless of how you may or may not have placed, you are all winners for working on projects and for participating in the fairs.  The fairs are supposed to be a FUN time, and a time to reflect upon the efforts that you have put into creating projects, working with your animals, etc.  If we go back to the roots of what 4-H is all about, 4-H is meant to provide hands-on learning experiences.  It also creates an environment for fun and fellowship with other people who share some of your same interests.

I hope that you will keep these things in mind when showing at the fairs.  While competition is good, do not let winning 1st place ever become more important than your relationships with your fellow 4-H’ers.  Ribbons and trophies are wonderful to win, but they are material things and they do not last, they are only for the moment.  Relationships can last a lifetime, and they are amongst the most important things in life.  Good sportsmanship and graciousness should be displayed at all times, and I hope you will do so.  This is not only for your own sake and the sake of your competition, but for the future of the 4-H program.  We are all ambassadors of 4-H. The public sees our behavior and judges our program based upon your behavior.  Please be sure you set a good example, and encourage your fellow 4-H’ers to do the same.

Thank you!

Mary

I hope to receive the parking passes and wrist bands prior to our June meeting.  If not, I will arrange a meeting to pick these up.

When camping out at the SD County Fair, using the jockey quarters, please remember the following:  An adult, over 21, must be in residence in each Jockey Quarter and is responsible for maintaining orderly conduct at all times and quiet after 10pm.  Exhibitors found without an adult will forfeit the room, no refund.

Western Equitation lesson

June 10th at 3pm, there will be a riding instructor at the Nunn Family Ranch who will be giving lessons in western equitation.  The cost for the lesson is $25/person.  Please note: This is not a 4-H sanctioned meeting or lesson; however, if you’d like some additional training in this area it is available.  Patty found this trainer and has asked him to come help teach since this is an area where we do not have a resident expert.  I hope those of you in the horse and pony project will support Patty’s efforts to bring in this instructor.  I’ve been told that he did a great job at a lesson that was given a few weeks ago!
