Community Service Leader’s Message – September 2011
It was great to see the wonderful turn out for our September kick-off meeting! I was very happy to see so many returning members and many first time visitors. If you were a visitor, I hope you’ll join us this year. 4-H is a lot of fun! It’s a great way to learn new things and make new friends!
A big thank you to everyone who has completed their online registration, turned in their medical health history, medical release forms, and paid their fees. The fees this year are $35/youth member and $10/adult volunteer. I will be processing the registrations and turning them into the county 4-H office. When your online registration and all of your paperwork has been completed, you should receive a confirmation of it via email. If you are a new volunteer, please be sure to complete your training, fill out your paperwork, pay your registration fee, and complete the Live Scan screening process as soon as possible. If you have any questions regarding this process, please give me a call.
Thank you!
Mary
President’s Message
Welcome
everybody to a new 4-H year! Our first meeting of the year was a success! There
were a lot of new faces, and I hope to keep seeing you guys at our meetings.
Remember to watch deadlines for enrollment, they come quicker than you think!
***Remember than you may not attend your project meeting until you are enrolled
in 4-H***. Be thinking about being a chairperson for the Jamul Parade. We really
need someone to step up and be chairperson for this! Hope to see you all at our
next unit meeting, which is October 4th!
-Haley Grigsby

The deadline to turn them in to Mary Bradley is Oct 4th. You must turn this in to receive credit for your 2010-2011 projects. If you are working towards earning your stars, please turn in the full record book. We will be holding our awards ceremony during our November business meeting. We want to reward you for all of your hard work, but we can’t do it without these important records/project reports. Call Mary if you have any questions. Thank you!
County Council Fundraiser for 2011-2012
This year the San Diego 4-H County Council is going to be putting together a cookbook. This will the County Council’s big fundraiser and it is taking the place of calendar sales. They promise the cookbook will be out in time to purchase them and sell them for Christmas presents! They would like all recipes submitted to Robbie Cranor by Sept. 30th. The recipe forms were available at the September unit meeting. If you would like to submit a recipe and did not pick up a form, please email your recipe directly to Robbie at FORD67@netmail.com, or contact Mary Bradley and she will email you a copy of the form. If you did pick up a form, please fill it out and mail it to:
San Diego County 4-H Office, Attn: Carol Hrigora, 9335 Hazard Way, Suite 201, San Diego, Ca 92123. The County Council would really like to get at least 6 recipes per club, so please take the time to submit one of your family favorites to them!
Communication
With a club of our size, communication is very important so all members are kept informed. When my wife and I were the Acornicle Newsletter editors in the 1980’s, the club members communicated with hand-written notes, telephone calls, and mailed letters. With today’s technology, we have email, cell phones, voice-mail, the club’s website, and on-line calendar to communicate with. Even with all this technology, good club communication does not happen without help.
- The club Reporter(s) should be reporting on the club activities and information presented at the Board and Unit meetings. The reports should be sent to the Editor to be included in the Acornicle.
- The club President should be sending a President’s Message to the Editor each month.
- The club Leader should be sending a Community Service Leader’s Message to the Editor each month.
- The Project Leaders should be sending project meeting information to the Editor each month.
- The Project Leader should encourage their Junior and Teen Project Leaders to send in project activity reports to the Editor each month.
- The Editor cross-checks the information and assembles it into the Acornicle newsletter.
- The Webmaster sends the newsletter out as an email to the club’s email list, and adds the Acornicle to the club’s website www.jamul4h.org. The on-line calendar is also updated with information from the newsletter.
If you, or someone you know, would prefer a printed and mailed copy of the Acornicle, give me 10 self-addressed, stamped (with Forever stamps) business-sized envelopes. I will print and mail the newsletter to you/them each month.
Webmaster, Gene Peterson

Chairpersons and Committee and needed!
Throughout the year our Club holds events and activities that require organization and leadership in the form of “Chairperson” and Committee member roles. These opportunities provide a learning experience for members in organizational skills, teaming and leadership under the guidance of an adult volunteer. As members grow in knowledge and ability they can take on bigger roles and pass on their acquired knowledge with less experienced members. This process has worked well in developing members skills and maintaining the events and activities our Club has come to expect and enjoy year after year. Upcoming events needing Chairs and Committee members will include the Holiday Party, Super Saturday Booth, ESDCJF Auction, Kiwanis Car Show, End of Year Potluck and Summer Party. Parents, please encourage your children to participate in Chairing and Committee membership whenever possible. The growth experience if invaluable and members will get a great sense of accomplishment.
