President’s Message

Hey everyone, this past month has been a crazy and tough one for all of us and especially the ones that lost their homes in the fires.  Thank you to all the members of 4-H who are supporting their community and all the fire victims.  Those $100 gift cards to Wal-Mart will really come in handy for those who need it.   Also, thanks so much to the firefighters who came and talked with us at the last unit meeting.  I encourage everyone to help out as much as they can so we can get back to normal life.  I hope this year is a success and I hope to see everyone having fun at all the events this year!

Your President,
Lucas A. Van Winkle

  Community Leader’s Message

A lot happened between our October and November unit meeting.  I’m thankful that no one was injured and most of us are getting back to normal.  I do want to say I’m sorry to the families in our club who lost their homes or have damaged homes.  Please let the group know if you have any needs, especially with housing animals.  We have received an e-mail from an Arizona club offering help.  I have e-mailed then with a suggestion.  Also, the gift cards we voted on to give to our families that were affected by the fire have been sent out.

I enjoyed having the fire department at the unit meeting.  I think that we as individuals need to be ready for wildfire as well as taking the peculations to protect our homes and animals.  I want to thank each member in our group that has helped people during this time.  Please do your best to volunteer at the fund-raiser on November 17 at the soccer field.

Next month will be our awards night.  If you have any questions about awards night please call Ginnie.

    Have a good Thanksgiving.

Fire Fund-raiser on November 17

On Saturday, November 17 there will be a community fund-raiser to help the families in Jamul who lost their homes in the fire. It will be held at the soccer fields at the elementary school.  Our group will be collecting pet food and canned food.  Please get the word out to bring pet food to the fund-raiser.  The Kiwanis need us to volunteer to collect pet and canned food starting at 9:00 AM.  This will be an all day event.  You can also bring clothes and household items to donate to the fire victims.

Other events will be astro-jumps and games, silent action, pancake breakfast, and lunch.

Their will also be a cake walk and treat or treat street that was originally planned for the fall festival at the school.  Please attend and show your support for our community.

Rabbits in Need of Good Homes

Gene Peterson has three Florida White rabbits that are in need of a good home.  They are all show quality.  Take one or take them all.  Due to the loss of his home he is unable to keep them at this time.  If interested, contact Gene (Suzie may answer the phone).

Junior Leadership Camp

This is special weekend event for sixth, seventh, and eighth graders.  The dates are Jan 25 -27.  Put these dates on your calendar.  Costs and registration forms will be at the next unit meeting.  Also, high school members can attend Junior Leadership Camp by being a session leader.  Forms for this must be turned in by November 16 to the county office.  Auditions will be held the next weekend.  Please call Ginnie for information.

Project Reports Due

All project reports and other record book information is due to Ginnie by November 20.  A signed project report must be turned in to receive your year pin and strip.  If you have questions or if this date is not workable, call Ginnie and we will work it out.

San Diego County All Star

All Star is the highest attainable county 4-H rank.  Applicants must be 14 years of age by January 1 of the current year.  They also must have earned an Emerald or Gold star.  Being an All Star is a strong commitment on the county level.  Jon Fowler in our group is a County All Star for San Diego.  If you are interested about learning more about this program, please contact Jon or All Star Advisor Kevin Fletcher (858-694-2849, county 4-H phone number)

All Star applications will be available online at the San Diego County 4-H web page under the awards and incentives heading at the beginning of January 2008.  The application will be due on February 29, 2008.

Board/Budget Meeting

The board meeting will be a busy one.  We need to adopt our budget for the year.  The budget was scheduled for the October meeting but the fires put that on hold.  We will also plan the agenda for the next unit meeting.  The board meeting is open to everyone.

Ramona Fair Update

The Ramona Fair grounds were damaged by the recent wild fires.  The fair lost tarps and the grounds themselves were burned.  Therefore, Ramona is planning a pizza fund-raiser and clean up day to repair the grounds.  The dates are not set yet but it will be the end of November or early December.  Please call Ginnie for the dates as more details come in.

Goats or Horse Needed
